SPEAKER: WES MOSS
Biography:
Wes Moss is now best know as the insightful author of Starting from
Scratch - Secrets from 21 ordinary people who made the entrepreneurial leap
(Kaplan Publishing). He "bootstrapped" his first ventures when he
was in his teens, turning his businesses into award-winning, prosperous
enterprises. Moss appeared as a candidate on NBC's popular show The
Apprentice with Donald Trump. A graduate in economics from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Moss built a substantial
investment practice and went on to become a vice president at one of the
world's largest investment firms after just five years.
He is also a Certified Financial Planner (tm) and along with his partners
manages more than $100 million in investments for high-net-worth individuals
and entrepreneurs. He acts as an instructor at Emory University's Center for
Lifelong Learning in Atlanta Georgia, and has appeared on CNBC, FOX and
Friends, the Today Show, Good Day New York, and numerous radio stations across
the country
About His Book:
Do you have what it takes to be a
successful entrepreneur?
In 2004, Americans established more than one million small businesses.
Many of these enterprising individuals simply reached the “tipping point”
that moment when they fled the corporate world to work for themselves.
If you have ever dreamed of starting your own business, are getting your
fledgling business off the ground, are in a performance-based position or are
still trying to figure out what you want to be when you “grow up”, then
Starting from Scratch is just the book for you. If you do not currently fit into
any of these categories, the book will help you realize why you probably should.
This massive rise in the number of business start-ups can be attributed to
numerous reasons. The baby boomers are getting down-sized, “right-sized” or
capsized from corporate America. Chances are, if it hasn’t happened to you
personally, it will happen to a family member or friend. Some will be forced to
start a business to earn income when they find their skill sets obsolete in the
rapidly changing, technological world we live in, or they are told they are
“over qualified” (translation we can’t afford to pay you what you are
worth).
For those that reached retirement, many aren’t ready to go golfing or sit on
the beach all day long. They are looking for their next challenge or can finally
focus on something they are passionate about because making a lot of money
isn’t as important. Starting a business helps them to reach some of the goals
they set when they were younger that the corporate world never afforded them.
For the younger generations, there is a lot of insecurity about Social Security.
Where there used to be as many as seventeen people paying in for each person
receiving benefits in the past, statistics predict that in the next decade, that
number could be as low as three people paying in for every one person receiving
benefits.
In addition to this, there is no 40-year plan anymore where you can go to work
for one company and retire with a great pension. Today’s business climate
demands that you be flexible and be a performer to help the company survive in
the global economy. Understanding what drives a business and being able to take
on different roles will make you more valuable to any employer or enable you to
branch out on your own.
As a Certified Financial Planner, author Wes Moss has seen numerous successful
business owners come through his door. He’s noticed how they often use their
businesses as an investment vehicle to carry them through to their financial
goals in addition to the more traditional routes. Chances are, most Americans
will need to develop multiple streams of income in order to retire with the
lifestyle they are currently accustomed to.
After appearing on NBC’s popular The Apprentice with Donald Trump, he decided
to study some of these successful entrepreneurs to find the common threads that
helped them get started, which is often the most difficult part and how they
continue to grow and prosper today. The top twenty-one stories are what appear
in Starting from Scratch.
Starting from Scratch supplies answers to many of the tough questions that
would-be entrepreneurs and new start-ups face:
- Out of so many unique entrepreneurial ventures, which one will work for
me?
- As an entrepreneur, do I gamble everything or take it one step at a time?
- Should I start my own business or take over an existing one?
- What are the first steps I need to take when venturing into the
marketplace?
- What types of resources are required to get started and where can I get
them?
- What can I expect in the early days?
- What steps will I need to take to leave a job and start a business?
- What are my chances of succeeding?
- What strategies are other successful business owners using to grow their
business?
Wes teaches the concept of the entrepreneurial H.U.N.T., the common threads
that all of the successful business owners applied to take their dreams to
reality. These secrets include:
- How to tap into your passion and natural abilities.
- How to continue growing and reaching for the next level.
- How to block out the obstacles that prevent you from starting or
progressing.
- Getting and using the support of people, businesses and media.
- The importance of taking action.
If that isn’t enough, Starting from Scratch provides a wide variety of sales
strategies and unique selling propositions that really stand out in the crowded
industries that many of these business owners find themselves in. Most of the
stories contain great insights into the sales psychology of the particular
industry involved, with crossover to countless business cases, making the book a
must have for anyone in business-to-business sales.
Wes specifically selected people that came from ordinary beginnings and had
numerous bumps along the road to give you a real solid picture of the
entrepreneurial mind and lifestyle. These aren’t get rich quick schemes, but
rather believable stories of thriving businesspeople who were once stuck in
mediocre incomes and jobs and now have liberated themselves through their
business and are each worth between $2 and $20 million.
